What is literature for?

Literature places fictional characters in impossible circumstances and tremendous suffering, so that we, the readers can get an insight into ourselves and others to ultimately become nicer. The characters become examples we use during our own unpredictable, harrowing journey. In the Power and the Glory, the Whisky Priest is wracked with doubt, vulnerable to temptation and a victim of unimaginable pain. The stories told in literature are all similar in the sense that they all tell us the story of the human condition: kindness, compassion and inadequacy.
